Bubba Watson takes Home the Trophy
by Ray Sabb
Hartford, CT – June 27, 2010 – Talk about a Tournament that was in the bag for Justin Rose, so everyone thought. Justin Rose led the field going into Sundays Championship round but somewhere his he lost his top game. With only a 4 stroke lead over the top 10 in the field he missed his opportunity while Bubba Watson, Scott Verplank and the rest of the field chased him down.
Bubba Watson, Steve Verplank and Corey Pavin had a three way tie at the 18th sending them into a Sudden Death playoff.
But his drive on 18 hit the cart path, and his ball stopped about 40 yards from the green. He made his birdie that sent him into a playoff at 14-under along with Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin.
On the first playoff hole, Watson hit his approach shot on 18 to within an inch of the cup, but watched as Scott Verplank sank an eight-foot birdie putt to send them back for a second playoff hole.
The next playoff hole sent them both back to the par-three 16th, where Scott Verplank couldn’t find the green, and left his chip about 10 feet short. Verplank missed his putt, challenging Watson to a must needed two-putt for par and the victory. Which is exactly what he did, giving the Florida native his first ever PGA Tour win.
